Ronan was born on June 13, 2001 in Edmonton to Joe and Ali. He is a big brother to Malcolm; grandson to Lydia, Teresa and Bob; nephew, cousin and friend to many. A 4th grader at Prince Charles School; musician; music lover; chess champion; Harry Potter fan; bananagram-er; card shark; board gamer, corny joke teller. And cancer fighter.

This blog is intended to ensure that Ronan’s vast support team of family and friends are connected, informed and engaged while he, dad Joe, mom Ali and brother Malcolm help him beat a terrible, scary disease - embryonal sarcoma, a rare childhood liver cancer. Zumba Zeal

On Friday, December 3, the gym at Prince Charles School filled up with 60 sassy Saint Johners to salsa, sambo, and tango the evening away in support of Team Ronan at a Zumba dance party.


Ali’s good friend and the event organizer, Tanya Paterson, happily called the benefit a huge success. Tanya and co-instructors Rachelle Perkins and Kathy Gilmore led a 90-minute class that included Ronan’s granddad Bob Leonard and 59 hip-swiveling ladies at this fun and fast paced Zumba dance party. Was it an accident that no photos of Bob exist? I think not.


Zumba is a fitness craze that borrows Latin flavor from salsa, merengue, mambo, flamenco, cha-cha-cha, samba, belly dancing, hip-hop, tango and other dance styles.


Prizes from Boston Pizza and the YMCA were claimed by some of the lucky Zoomers and a large contribution to team Ronan was generated from the generosity of all who participated!


Team Ronan extends its sincerest thanks to Tanya, Rachelle and Kathy the organizers of its first Zumba dance party and welcomes the wonderful participants of this event to the team! Team Ronan is truly inspired, uplifted and grateful to the support shown by the whole community. We continue to be overwhelmed by your thoughtful acts. Thank you all!

    Hey Ali! Your Dad was hiding in the back! I tried to get a picture but it was very dark and I couldn't get a good picture. But he was AWESOME!

    Ali- your Dad Rocked in the back! When Rachelle was "up", I scooted to the back and man, he didn't Stop! What a Grand night of Zumba we had. What better way to spend a Friday night- imagine-a healthy way. On that note, I heard the great news that the bff's got a great hug today, which means you're HOME with your Family! Yeah! Such great news. I wish you a Lovely Christmas season- obviously a little different than most, to say the least, but with the lovely people in your circle, you're in goooood hands. Love to meet you someday. You have a special friend in Tanya, that's for sure.
