Ronan was born on June 13, 2001 in Edmonton to Joe and Ali. He is a big brother to Malcolm; grandson to Lydia, Teresa and Bob; nephew, cousin and friend to many. A 4th grader at Prince Charles School; musician; music lover; chess champion; Harry Potter fan; bananagram-er; card shark; board gamer, corny joke teller. And cancer fighter.

This blog is intended to ensure that Ronan’s vast support team of family and friends are connected, informed and engaged while he, dad Joe, mom Ali and brother Malcolm help him beat a terrible, scary disease - embryonal sarcoma, a rare childhood liver cancer. So welcome to Ronan’s blog. Sit, read, cry, and vow to fight this fight with Ronan, Malcolm, Ali and Joe. And please leave a few words of encouragement with a Comment.

Good News

We visited our nurse Judy at the Regional today. She is amazing. She is also the same height as Ronan - which he likes very much! We saw her on Tuesday and Ronan had lost 2lbs on the weekend and she was concerned about his weight loss. He was also at his lowest in terms of white blood cell count on the weekend, so his appetite wasn't great. So Wednesday and Thursday I made all his favourites and beefed up the recipes with extra fat (Ben & Jerry's ice-cream, french toast with butter, maple syrup and whole milk, tofu stir-fry etc.) and he gained his 2lbs back! Thanks Karen for advising me to give him stuff like that instead of forcing the Carnation breakfasts!

Ronan had to get a pint of blood today - it takes 3 hours! Tonight I decided I would donate for the first time, but was refused after my finger poke results say my iron is too low. Good incentive to eat more greens and chickpeas and try again in 56 days!

As for Ronan - his white blood counts are great, his hemoglobin should be back up after today and so energy and appetite will be good too. All good things to rejuvenate and prep for Round 4.

Also, thank you Greg Marks and Local 815 Musicans for giving Ronan the white blood cell stuffy! He thinks it's great and brought it with him for his hospital visit.

  1. Hi Ronan
Wow 2 pounds. Good job! Its not that easy to gain 2 pounds when you're not feeling the best, is it? What does your other food advisor - Malcolm - recommend as a reward? Probably more Doritos. Other great ideas? If I know Malcolm he's got a clever idea up his sleeve this time. Hope you still have some room Ronan.

Really good work Ronan. Keep it up.

    love you

  2. Ali,

I have had good luck getting lots of food into a blender and they drink it. Yop with fruit and creamed tofu and a bit of milk and some high fat ice cream on top, and a bananna to make it thick. Mix and match what Ronan likes and voila!

    Hope it helps!
