Ronan was born on June 13, 2001 in Edmonton to Joe and Ali. He is a big brother to Malcolm; grandson to Lydia, Teresa and Bob; nephew, cousin and friend to many. A 4th grader at Prince Charles School; musician; music lover; chess champion; Harry Potter fan; bananagram-er; card shark; board gamer, corny joke teller. And cancer fighter.

This blog is intended to ensure that Ronan’s vast support team of family and friends are connected, informed and engaged while he, dad Joe, mom Ali and brother Malcolm help him beat a terrible, scary disease - embryonal sarcoma, a rare childhood liver cancer. So welcome to Ronan’s blog. Sit, read, cry, and vow to fight this fight with Ronan, Malcolm, Ali and Joe. And please leave a few words of encouragement with a Comment.

Day 9

Goodnight everyone. I'm taking the first sleep shift but before I do I have to say a few things.
Thanks for the visits today from Ed and Joan Fougere (Ed and Joe's dad were first cousins). Joan it was lovely to meet you. Come again soon.
Mama Lydia, Jim, Angie and Hugh it was nice to have all of you stay this weekend.
Dr. Susan Sanderson - you are so sweet to have delivered Helen and Miranda's yummy food. I am happy you are visiting again in the morning.

Okay so I know all of you are thinking of us, praying hard, sending love, emailing, calling, making cards, sending gifts, planning events, visiting, baking cookies etc. etc.
You know when you do things that are a bit out of the ordinary and you are glad you did them? Today I woke up with the idea that I was going to make Ronan his favourite pancakes. Blueberry. His appetite is really low, so anything to get in his belly the better (he is on an iv so even Doritos are ok - I like this running joke). Well in the late afternoon he was allowed away from his skinny friend (iv pole) for an hour. We went outside for a little while and then he was tired so we went back to room 619 and he had a nap. I asked Joe if he could go to the store to pick up some frozen blueberries, eggs and maple syrup for my planned supper (the kitchen had the rest of the ingredients for me). It was past 5pm by this time and the nurses told us the stores close at 5. I was disappointed...but Joe walked to the Sobeys a few blocks away (he googled them first to find out the store was open until 8). The pancake idea was still my plan and so far so good, things were turning out.
Okay, so this is my first time cooking here, 3 floors down but I'm determined. The kitchen is run by volunteers and there were 2 young girls, one looked familiar, but we have met about 30 new faces this week so I didn't think anything of it. As I was cooking, I overheard them talking about SJ. Okay I'm getting tired too. I'll get to the point. The girls are room mates at Dalhousie - Andrea Gautier and Robin Hebb. Robin doesn't usually volunteer here but was filling in for someone for Andrea. We got chatting and I asked Robin if she was part of "Blowfish" - a SJ Theatre production I really enjoyed watching this summer. Yes, she did act in that. (I was amazed at that moment that my brain was working so well!) Robin was also involved in the SJ Arts awards gala last May. Anyway, Kate Elman-Wilcott (Interaction Kids) works with Robin in the summers and asked her to visit Ronan at the IWK. I had a rush of goosebumps and felt like everyone was thinking happy thoughts so Robin and I would meet. I told Joe it was such a coincidence it wasn't a coincedence. Kate thank you for everything - Robin and Andrea I would love to go for a latte sometime -
sweet dreams everyone. I felt your love, happy thoughts and prayers tonight.
Team Ronan rocks.

  4. I'm just as in awe of our meeting as you are. I haven't been able to stop thinking about it all day. I hope to here from you soon for that latte date. :)

  5. Ali, I'm so happy you and Robin were able to connect. As soon as I found out where you were I contacted her. When Ronan is up to feeling silly, or just having a cool "big kid" to hang with, Robin is the person to call! Same goes for you:)
We're working away on the dinner/auction, and Dad is planning on hosting chess "simuls" at the malls to raise funds as well. He's going to try to have some of Ronan's chess buddies help him out, too.
Chuck, Jason, and I have been in contact about working together on an event in December, in addition to the show on the 18th and the dinner.
Sophie misses Miss Leonard terribly, but is practicing hard to make you proud.
We're all sending love and good Karma your way.
    -Kate Elman Wilcott
